Why is my lawn yellow, mossy or patchy?

Find your symptom below. Most Fife lawn problems come back to four root causes: compaction, shade, nutrient balance, and mowing height. Fix those four and the rest looks after itself — without a single chemical.

Carpet of green-yellow moss across the lawn

Likely cause

Compaction, shade, poor drainage, infrequent mowing — moss thrives where grass struggles.

Chemical-free fix

Scarify (rake out) the moss in spring or autumn. Aerate compacted areas with a fork or hollow-tine aerator. Top-dress with sandy compost in shady patches. Overseed with a shade-tolerant grass mix. Repeat annually.

Yellow or pale-green patches that come and go

Likely cause

Nitrogen deficiency, dog urine spots, or scalped areas where the mower drops over a step.

Chemical-free fix

For dog spots, water heavily to flush. For nutrient deficiency, top-dress with compost; avoid blanket synthetic fertiliser. Adjust mower height — never scalp.

Brown circles or rings, especially after wet autumns

Likely cause

Fairy ring fungus, common in older lawns. Looks alarming but the lawn usually recovers.

Chemical-free fix

Aerate the affected ring deeply. Top-dress with fresh compost. Keep watered in dry spells. Avoid spreading clippings from affected areas.

Bare, hard-packed strips where everyone walks

Likely cause

Compaction. Soil is so dense grass roots can't establish.

Chemical-free fix

Aerate every spring. In severely worn paths, consider stepping stones or a gravel route. Reseed with a hardwearing rye-grass mix.

Weeds running rampant — daisies, dandelions, plantain

Likely cause

Thin sward, mowing too short, low fertility, gaps in coverage.

Chemical-free fix

Mow regularly but not too short (4–5cm in summer). Overseed thin patches in autumn. Hand-weed established perennials like dandelions before they seed. A thick, healthy lawn out-competes most weeds without chemicals.

Lawn turns straw-coloured in dry spells

Likely cause

Drought dormancy — the lawn is alive but conserving energy. Rarely actual death.

Chemical-free fix

Don't panic-water unless it's prolonged. Raise mowing height in summer to shade roots. The lawn will come back with rain.

Yellow scorch lines following a clear pattern

Likely cause

Over-fertilising or fertiliser spilled / overlapped — common with synthetic granular feeds.

Chemical-free fix

Water heavily to flush. Switch to seaweed-based feeds or compost top-dressing. Reseed the worst lines in autumn.

Mushy, spongy lawn underfoot

Likely cause

Thatch buildup — dead grass and debris layer between living blades and soil.

Chemical-free fix

Scarify in spring or early autumn. Aerate. Reduce frequency of leaving clippings if you have heavy thatch. Long-term: improve soil drainage with regular aeration.

Bumpy surface, ankle-twisting in summer

Likely cause

Worm casts (good!), uneven settling, mole activity, or old tree-stump rot.

Chemical-free fix

Brush worm casts dry, never flatten with a roller. Top-dress low spots gradually with screened topsoil. Worms are doing you a favour — leave them be.
