What to do when frost is coming
Cover tender plants
Horticultural fleece, an old sheet or even cardboard works. Lift it off in the morning so plants get light and air.
Move pots to shelter
Group pots against a south-facing wall, or under the eaves. Terracotta cracks in hard frost — wrap with hessian if you can't move it.
Drain outdoor taps
Hard frost cracks pipework. Drain hoses and turn off outdoor taps from inside the house if you have an isolation valve.
Hold off on planting
Bedding plants, runner beans, courgettes — wait until consistent overnight lows above 5°C before planting out. The tracker above tells you when.
