How much compost capacity do you actually need? Most home setups are too small — and compost is the single best soil improvement you can make.
Small: courtyard / front garden. Medium: standard back garden. Large: ¼ acre+.
Productive = veg, fruit and lots of borders.

Two parts "brown" (cardboard, dry leaves, straw, woody prunings) to one part "green" (grass clippings, kitchen scraps, soft prunings). Most failed compost heaps fail because they're too wet and too green — slimy and smelly. Add brown until it stops.
A two- or three-bay system isn't excessive. Bay 1: this year's additions. Bay 2: rotting down. Bay 3: ready to use. Turn from one to the next once a year and you have a permanent self-renewing supply of free compost.
What to keep out: meat, dairy, cooked food (rats), perennial weed roots (couch grass, ground elder), diseased material, dog waste.
Hand-built timber compost bays from scrap or new — 1, 2 or 3 bays, sized to your garden.
